Amnesia Girl Part I and Part II

Amnesia Girl Part I and Part II consists of Philo Vance; The Girl Who Came Back. Recorded in the year July 28th 1943. The audio consists of the following;

Amnesia Girl – Part I.

Audio Clip #01; “When a man's wealthy, a widower without children; it's possible that some dishonest person to try to get his money away from him. When the widower lost his only child; in a drowning some nine years ago. The most logical way to get the money, since the body of the drowned child was never recovered; would be to pretend to be the dead girl.”

Audio Clip #02; “Just what is your story Mister Martin. Perhaps I can suggest someone who'd be glad to help.” “It's horrible Mister Vance, you see I live on the Long Island. Great Neck Long Island; I have a home there on the water.” “I know the fiction.” “I'm alone now, my wife died six years ago.” I See.” “You may remember; it was in the papers. Our only child was drowned on our beach; when she was eleven.” “Ah I'm sorry.” “It was a great tragedy Miss Randell, Miss Martin never really got over it.” “Oh, then this wasn't recent.” “Oh, no, no; she was drowned uh, nine years ago Mister Vance.” “nineteen thirty six.” “In it, that's right. My wife died three years later. The child and I were swimming together, I can remember so plainly; she ventured out to far, while I was on shore and she, she was caught in a riptide.” “How horrible.” “I, I heard her scream, but couldn't reach her. I saw her body carried out to sea Mister Vance, I saw it myself.” “It was recovered?” “Never, no that's the way it is. Her body was never found. I offered ten thousand Mister Vance. Just to give her poor mother that much piece of mind. But her body was never washed in.” “Well I am sorry Mister Martin, I can understand a tragedy like that. But I don't quite see.” “Yesterday Mister Vance, Jean came home!” “What?” “Yes I didn't quite get that myself.” “This, this girl, this fraud Mister Vance; this cunning little impostor. She came into my home yesterday, Try to tell me that she was my own daughter.” “What you?” “Why Mister Martin; Surely; surely you can tell.” “Why of course I can tell. She's a scheming little cheat Mister Vance; she's no more my Jean, then this lady is.” “I don't see there's anything to worry about Mister Martin, why not phone the police?” “When I do, I will only do it once! But my law firm bares my namesake. Unpleasant for amity that's all. Notoriety, well why will I lose my focus, to keep it unsafe.” “Logically if the girl is impostor you make sure you worst her. Trip her up in some simple little lesson into her past. To her mothers; to convene about it.” “That's just it, this girl knows more about me, than I do myself. Terrifying Mister Vance; she knows the house, the grounds, the country side and she swears she's my daughter.” “I don't mean to be simple. But where does she say she's been all this time?” “Oh she has a story for that too. It appears as if she was washed up on shore, a complete victim of amnesia.” “Well...” “Yes.. the gull of it. Tried to tell me she was out of memory for nine years and came out of it this week in a fall down stairs.” “Hmm, it's sounds horrible.” “You don't recognize her of course?” “I'm sure she's not my daughter Mister Vance, definitely sure.” “Well she would change naturally, she was eleven when she was drowned; twenty now, yes she'd change a great deal.” “Oh not that much Vance!” “Yet you say she seems worse from an alleged homicide.“ “It's amazing, that's why I can't call the police, her story is just convincing enough; they'd; they'd dragged it through the papers for weeks.” “She's working this time with a coach, someone who told her the right answers, right Vance?” “You know I would like to meet a girl who would have a plan like this, I really would.” “Then you'll help me Mister Vance, You'll expose her?” “Tell the girl I'll swing later on!” “Now, uh huh eh? Not while you consort a twenty year old girl darling. I'll stick with you!”

Audio Clip #03; “And this brings us back to the wine rack Mister Vance. Now you've seen the whole stage.” “I see you a camera enthusiast Mister Martin.” “Ah? Oh Miss Martin; ah I dabble in it. When the war broke out and the doctors told me to do something about my nerves so I picked up the Darth there.” “Oh indeed they are excellent.” “I have a dark room downstairs, I'll open it up if you like.” “I'd enjoy it.” “Now if you'd send the young lady in please, I'll show you how grateful I am Mister Vance.” [mumbles, and opens door.] “Mister Vance wants to see you.” “What about?” “Come in miss huh.” “Miss Martin, Jean Martin.” [Door closes.] “So we've heard. Sit down Miss Martin. If you don't mind I'd like to ask you a few questions.” “I suppose he hired you!” “On the I should have paid to meet you. I admire your courage.” “Yeah very funny.” “You, You can tell you've been under amnesia for nine years, is that right?” “That's right, but surely you've known where you've been?” “I remember falling, I must have hit my head, because there was a bump on it. And that's all.” “That's all?” “When I came to, I was about a block from here. That was last night.” “You mean you don't know where you've been for nine years?” “You heard me!” “Oh your language chum, doesn't quite go for the take right around here.” “Okay, for me the last nine years weren't so good. How do I know?” “That lane puts you in a well known place.” “Mister I'm Jean Martin, and you and anybody else can prove any different. So let's get down to terms.” “Terms? What kind of terms?” “I will give you, tell you that Hun. Well listen my grandfather was stinking rich. He was loudly with it see; and it all came to me. Only my father was to get it if I died.” “And now you've come back for the money that's rightfully yours, is that it?” “You think I'd let you keep it? You won't even listen to me.” “Imagine being so meek.” “You keep out of things.” “careful girls. You did hick-up on one small detail you know. Jean Martin had a scar on her right wrist. A rather permanent scar. And you have...” “A scar can heal, can it! I had the scar; it's gone now, it's been gone for years.” “Oh brother you are really good!” “Listen you...” “wait a minute, keep talking ladies... there's someone at the door.” “I know what I'd like to say.” “A nice afternoon like this and we come all the way out here to...” “Care to join us?” “Come here.” [scuffle] “Hey you, let go of me...” “Vance, gladly.” “And whom might I ask are you?” “A long lost brother know doubt.” “Well...” “I, I work here. I'm the chauffeur.” “That's right; Bill and I use to play together when we were kids.” “Would you say that slowly honey, I wanna be sick today.” “His father worked for us before. He was grown up on the estates. We used to play together all the time.” “Is that right Bill?” “I never saw her before in my life.” “Why you?!” “But you did live here. You did play with the real Jean Martin?” “Sure, she was a great little kid, I taught her to swim.” “Your remember a scar on the wrist of course.” “Sure I do, right here, about an inch and a half. She got cutting a watermelon at a pick nick out on the lawn. Heck I went with her, and my dad brought in to town to the doctor.” “I see. Well you've been a great help Bill, you'll be around if I need you again.” “Yeah, I'll be around.” “Thank you.” “Mister he's lying I tell you he remembers me even more.” “sure honey; we all do.” “Would you ask your old papa to come in here Jean.” “Listen, you stop crackin' both of you's cause I'm Jean Martin brother and that's I.” “Ask him to come in please!” “Sure, go ahead play detective all you like. A Betty” “Your through Mister Vance.” “Not what's on my chest Mister Martin, the local police couldn't handle the situation lightly. Let's all sit down now.” “Sure I got all the time in the world.” “You scheming little...” “Take it easy daddy!” “On the way out here young lady; Listen I'll explain your un-usually well acquainted with this house. In short you can answer questions an outsider wouldn't know.” “I told ya I used to live here. Remember?” “You knew for instance that your mother played the piano. That the rose garden was once to the north, rather then where it is now. That the roof in the east wing is new.” “Yes it was radioed in, it's uncanny.” “Obviously the build was well host. Is Bill in on the deal Jean?” “My unconfirmed Bill.” “We've met him Mister Martin.” “Why that's absurd. I practically raised the boy myself. His father died here under my employ.” “Try again mister detective.” “Suppose, Suppose we find money Jean, does that interest you?” “Sure it does! If the money belongs to me, don't forget I'm Jean Martin!” “You know Mister Martin, the girl might be telling the truth!” “Oh Vance.” “Why that's ridiculous Mister Vance, I'm surprised that you mentioned such a thing.” “Stranger things have happened you know. And the girl is right, [muffled] scars do disappear in time.” “But I haven't...” “ As for her amnesia, that's entirely possible to.” “Now your doing ok!” “Vance, what in the w...” “My suggestion Mister Martin would be to settle this someway now. Right here in this room.” “I, I think I'll have a drink.” “Perhaps a cup for us all. Lain?” “You do sound like you have ten down.” [muffled.] “Here is scotch, does it remind her of anything.” “That would be likely, thanks.” “Let me pour the drink. I'm your darling you know! You want one too?” “Oh I might as well. I feel it already.” “There ya are Mister Vance!” “Ah Thank you. Now then let's drink to...” “The success of our lobbying, how's that?” “To the success of what we accomplished here.” [Female laughter.] “Mister Vance wait,” “But that's my...” “No, don't drink that, it's poisoned Vance. That glass if full of poison.” “Vance!” “Ahh, I seemed to have spilled my drink.” “Vance you didn't... drink it.” “Thank you Mister Martin. No...” “I'm sorry I had to knock it out of your hand Mister Vance. You devil.” “Why listen!” “Now why Mister Vance, I know that odor anywhere. Emulsion I use in my dark room downstairs. You little fiend! You knew I kept chemicals in there. Then when Mister Vance was going to expose you, you decided to poison him!” “But..” “Lord!” “I am grateful to you Mister Martin. It seems I almost drank a developed a highball.” “You'll can leave all of ya.” “You be quiet! I had enough out of you! Well Mister Vance, should I call the police?” “It won't be necessary Mister Martin. Miss Randell and I are driving into town. Well take our young friend with us.” “Why you Chump!” “Oh I would like to take Bill too Mister Martin. I am not entirely sure he isn't mixed up in this.” “Take them all, I just want that woman out of my house.” “I assure you Mister Martin, you've seen the last of her.”

Amnesia Girl – Part II.

Audio Clip #01; “Want me to stay Mister Vance, I mean with all this?” “I think not Tony, I'll call if I need you.” “Oh Vance dear.” “Yes Miss Lain?” “Is it fair to ask one little question?” “By all means.” “What in the name are we doing here in your apartment? Just take them down to the district attorney's office and be done with it.” “Look Mister Vance, you got me all wrong. I never saw this dame before last night!” “Yes you did Billy, yes you did.” “Alright kid. I think the shows gone far enough. You can take that layer of skin off your wrist Jean.” [Muffled.] This is what I mean Jean, let me have your wrist, palm.” “Get away from her.” “Alright Bill. I'm frightened she is Jean Martin. Jean, just an ordinary skin patch, isn't Jean? Very neatly flaunt too!” “She's got the scar!” “She has, Miss Martin, Miss Randell!” “How do you do?” “You win Mister Vance.” “You found her of course Bill?” “Yes sir, I never gave up looking for Jean.” “The Amnesia story is... true then?” “Quite true Mister Vance, I came to in a pinch about six miles from our house. On the day I was forcefully drown I mean, I was eleven years old.” “The doctors figured a wave threw her up against a log or something in the water Mister Vance, her head was cut.” “And then Jean?” “Well I couldn't remember anything Mister Vance, for days I walked around in kinda of a dream. And finally I was taken to the good shepherds office. There's a full room check if you like. I've been working there from when they brought me in.” “Go on.” “Just as Bill said, he always looked for me. He never believed I was drowned.” “I couldn't afford to hire detectives or advertise Mister Vance. Especially working right there in the Martin home. I just ask questions and write letters. Then when a reply sounded worthwhile I would investigate on my time off.” “One letter came to the good shepherd asking about an amnesia case in 1936. So they told Bill about me. Bill came out to see me, and here we are.” “I see. I know that's cleared up a great deal.” “Vance you are out of your mind. Why those two are bigger phonies than I thought.” “Why Lain.” “For one thing, why did our hero here keep all this from the girl's father. Why not let him set his money looking for his own daughter.” “He thought she was dead.” “Oh and you knew better I suppose?” “Mister Martin was careful that there was no publicity at the time of the drownings. Miss Randell, just a little to careful.” “Why would he keep it quiet if the body wasn't found.” “Ok will skip that for a minute. Suppose you are Jean Martin, why the misfit, why show off the one scar the proves it. Why pay tough and [Muffled.] all afternoon. And you Bill, you pretend you didn't even know here, what goes on here.” “Fair question Lain. Do you want to answer Jean?” “Well you are convinced I am Jean Martin Mister Vance.” “Beyond a doubt Jean, even without the cup, I knew it before we left your home.” “Alright I'll tell you, my father tried to murder me.” “What?” “I know that sounds strange, but it's true. I wasn't carried away by the tides that day. And he wasn't on the shore as he says!” “He held her head underwater Mister Vance, held her and pushed her out to sea.” “When I got back I knew If I proved I was Jean, right away he would murder again. If I went to the police he would call me impostor and he would even lie about my scar. The only thing to do was to throwing off my scar by convincing him I was a fake.” “You see I we hoped we could find a way to trick him into admitting he tried to kill her. We planned it together Mister Vance, When Mister Martin called you in, we didn't know what to do.” “You see Lain?” “Just skip me Vance, I'm so dizzy now, just let me sit here and think.” “It was quite simple really. Martin called in to bolster his own case. Now I think will un-bolster it a little.” “But how Mister Vance? What can we do now, he's got all of Jean's money, everything.” “Jean, I told you once today you got nerves. Think you could use it again.” “I can try Mister Vance.” “Sure, here's exactly what I want you to do.”

Audio Clip #02; “Mister Martin sir.” “Yes Bill?” “Uh, that bolt's loose again sir. I'm afraid it's been damaged hitting against the dock.” “Why can't you keep the boat tied properly?” “I'm sorry Mister Martin, I wasn't here this afternoon you know.” “Oh yes, that's true. I'm glad you came out to see me Mister Vance, and Mister Bill. Mister Vance called and told me that the police are convinced that you had nothing to do with that uh, that girl.” “Yes sir.” “Let's forget the whole incident, boat damaged you say?” “Yes sir, I wish you would go down and look for yourself Mister Martin and you could tell me what's to be done.” “Alright that will do. Bright nights like this, I like to be outside. Yeah go on son, I'll look at it in the right time.” “Yes sir. I'll be in my quarters if you want me.” “Thank you Bill.” [Walking, door opening and closing.] “Beautiful night. Really beautiful, I'll get the camera. And like that I'll get the shot without light at all.” [Muffled... tell em to stop.] [Boat rustling] “I think I can inspect a boat without a knife. Yeah, my what a wonderful night.” [Female lightly singing...] “What I, I could have sworn I... ...That song!” [Woman singing by a boat.] “Jean!” [Jean singing.] “I must be, be asleep! I, stop that, stop that singing.” “You used to sing to me when I was a little girl... You and mother used to [muffled] when I used to read. Remember daddy?” “Stop it I say. Who are you?” “See the scar on my wrist? The scar I got cutting a melon on the lawn! You remember daddy, mother was there. By the end of the day. Remember?” “Jean!” “I was ten when I got that scar. Then I was eleven.” “Shut up, Shut up I say!” “When I was eleven we went swimming on afternoon right here daddy, right here in this peer.” [muffled] “You let me hold on to your back as we swam out daddy, way out where the waters deep and cold. Then you held my neck under. You held me you pushed me down, down into the water! Remember how I tried to scream, Remember how I felt struggling in your arms! Did you...” “You, You didn't die!” “You tried to murder me in this water. You held me down until you thought I was dead. But I didn't drown daddy! You see I'm here now, I'm right here in front of you!” “You fool! You think you can come back now, you'd think I'd let you come back after all I did? That money's mine and it's gonna stay mine! I thought I murdered you once, this time its for... [muffled]” [struggling on a boat] “Don't move please I have a gun!” “Eh? Where did you come from?” “Come on to the peer away! Oh Bill lights please!” “Right Mister Vance!” “Vance did it work?” “Beautiful Lain, he tried to drown her just as I said he would. Alright Jean? Get him on the peer Martin. Watch it Bill. I'll help Jean.“ [muffled and movements on the dock.] “You think this is about as clean as a sort of modest ness of my car. You'll find curry, tell her we've been waiting.” “Yes sir, come on Martin, this is the end of the line.” “Well huh, you by any chance have a spare power ring. Bottom rung the ladder down there was just a little wet.” “Huh huh. Vance tell me something before I part.” “But...” “Oh, hell stop me. Why you sure Jean was Jean? Because you saw the fake scar that she hide it.” “Well that helped Lain. But I wasn't sure as Martin tried to make it look as if she poisoned my drink.” “But.” “Elementary as that made would say, Martin knew he'd install his photographic room after the market crashed in 1939, remember?” “Yes of course, but I still don't...” “But, but, but darling... when he turned down Jean, and put a few can of glue down my drink. He said she knew the dark room was there. She couldn't have if she was his daughter. She drowned three years before it was put in. and if she was a phony she was to well put, to portray herself that way. And finally pat, the dark room was locked. Martin couldn't fetch it better.” “Well then Vance, in a way your really hot stuff.” “Gone away with the moment, no one can be that sound.” “Huh huh.” “What's so funny!” “Oh nothing, I'm just thinking... You really got that win after all.”
