[05:53.95]it will last until you get a job. What about it?”
[05:57.28]“I don't know Billy, maybe I'd do it; if it wasn't for Sam.
[06:02.91]But, well he's had just as tough a time as we had. I owe him a clean fight.”

[07:07.51]“Oh Mister Markum never mind who this is, you gotta listen to me.”
[07:10.17]“Alright if I must what is it?”
[07:11.76]“There's a big fight on tonight, Mike Degard against K.O. Colliny the Champ.”
[07:15.79]“Yes, I know.”
[07:16.31]“Well, Mister Markum, I've been up all night trying to figure out what to do. I just decided the best thing was to call your office.”
[07:22.65]“Well having decided that, having done that, suppose you tell me what's this all about?”
[07:27.64]“There's a mob in back of the champ, a tough mob; and there trying to see that Mike Degard doesn't win the title tonight.
[07:33.81]They'll do anything to see that Colliny keeps it, you have to protect Mike. You got to, promise me you will.”

[08:06.33]“Sure D.A. the club will be loaded with cops tonight anyhow,
[08:09.35]we always have them on hand in a fight. Don't worry about anything, will handle anything that happens to 'em.”
[08:15.27]” [Dialing the phone] “Who you callin'?”
[08:17.49]“Philo Vance.”
[08:18.58]“Why? Cause some crackpot dame thinks the challenger is gonna get knocked off tonight?”
[08:23.37]“Hardly, I nearly want to invite him to the fight that's all.”
[08:25.98]“Oh.”
[08:26.41]“Hello, office of Philo Vance private investigator, Miss Woods speaking.”
[08:29.62]“Miss Woods, this is district attorney Markum, is Miss Jerrings still away?”
[08:32.65]“Yes she is, her mother is still sick. So Mister Vance keeps me on as his contemporary secretary.”
[08:37.23]“You probably mean temporary, but we won't bother about that now;
[08:41.16]is Vance there?”
[08:41.84]“Is he here? He's practically on pins and needles waiting to talk to you, just a minute;
[08:46.23]it's for you Mister Vance, here.”
[08:48.00]“Thank you, hello Markum, I was hoping you'd call.”
[08:50.83]“Well thank you Vance, that very complimentary. Uh, if you wanted to speak to me why didn't you call me?”

[09:09.79]“Well, thank you very much Markum;
[09:11.29]I like very much to go, you still have an extra ticket,
[09:14.65]but will think of somebody. Thanks again and I'll call you back anf arrange a meeting place.”
[09:19.28]“Oh I incidentally Vance, I'm not promising anything but there just might be a little unscheduled excitement at the fight.”
[09:24.70]“Rreally Markum, that sounds wonderful, I'll see you later, goodbye.”
[09:28.89]” “Bye.” [Vance hangs up the phone]
[09:30.54]“Mister Vance, I don't want to sound like I'm forward or anything like that but I understand Mister Markum had an extra ticket?”

[09:37.72]” “Well gee if wouldn't put anybody out, I sure would like to see that fight Mister Vance.”

[09:52.16]“I never boxed any.”
[09:53.87]“Huh huh ha.”
[09:55.36]“But Mister Vance should we continue on the history of the last thing we were working on, the present murder case?”
[10:00.54]“I think we better Miss Woods. What disturbs me was that was last week. We haven't had a single killing this week to work on.”
[10:08.02]“Oh there's gonna be one tonight Mister Vance! I can tell you that without the slightest thought that I was a pre fabricator.”
[10:13.37]“I don't question your telling the truth; even though I think you mean prevaricator, Miss Woods. But your sure there will be a killing tonight?”
[10:20.79]“Match at the fight, when Mike Degard gets the Champ in the ring tonight; He'll murder the bum.”
